Research & Consultancy

Since its establishment in 2004, the Department of Law and Criminology has made a distinct and highly regarded scholarly contribution in two research fields:

1. The Harm, Rights and Justice Group focuses on disasters and emergency planning, the politics of punishment, national and international human rights law, police powers, judicial review, critical histories of crime, power and justice and research ethics.

2. The European Law Group focuses on the law of the European Union, with particular attention on internal market law, anti-trust rules and the regulation of specific sectors of economic activity including the telecommunications and sports markets. Within this group, sports law research is undertaken within a specialist research centre, the Centre for Sports Law Research.

Our work is not only published in the academic press. Staff research continues to shape public policy in the UK and internationally. Members of the department have worked on projects for local authorities, national charities, the UK Home Office, the House of Lords, the European Commission, the European Parliament and a number of national and international non-governmental bodies.
