St George's Day
St George's Day is a celebration to honour the patron saint of England, St. George. The day is celebrated in numerous countries outside of England including, Spain, Portugal, Russia, and Italy. Most countries who observe St. George's Day, celebrate it on April 23, the date of his death.
For England, St. George's Day symbolizes a National remembrance of one of the most courageous martyrs in history. There are many stories of St. George’s heroism, however, all the legends share a common premise that St. George had a kind, brave disposition. His reputation, for defending Christianity at a time when it was considered evil, has and will continue to surpass many other brave men for thousands of years.
During his time in the military he wore a silver/ white patch with a red cross sewn into the centre, which is known today as St. George’s cross. Due to his chivalrous acts and his strength and charm, he became an admired solider amongst all groups, civil and cavalry alike. His followers all wore the cross and have done so since his death.
