Support & Immigration Advice

Pre-Departure & Arrival at Edge Hill University

Preparing to move to a new country can be one of the most exciting and scariest things to do. The Centre for International Education has produced a pre-arrival brochure to help guide you through those few weeks prior to departing your home country and moving to the UK.

The British Council has also written a pre-arrival guide for International Students coming to the UK to study, to view an electronic version please download: http://www.britishcouncil.org/first_steps_2011-12.pdf

Pre-Departure

When booking your flight, you should ensure that you enter the UK through one of the recognised immigration points, for example, Liverpool or Manchester airports. You should ensure that you do not book flights through the Republic of Ireland, this is not part of the United Kingdom and you will not get the requisite visa stamp in your passport.

Similarly, we recommend that students do not enter the UK through the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man to prevent any potential problems in obtaining the correct visa stamp.

Should you not enter through a recognised immigration point you will likely have to take action to rectify the situation and this could mean leaving the UK temporarily at a cost to yourself. Edge Hill University does not accept responsibility for any loss incurred by students who do not arrive in the country at a recognised immigration point.

Orientation

The Orientation programme is designed to help students to settle into life in the UK and studying in a new country. It is expected that all international students will attend the orientation programme and failure to do so could mean important information is not passed on or cause difficulties for you to settle in.

As well as the orientation programme arranged by the Centre for International Education, your department will carry out induction sessions, information about this can be found on the main Edge Hill website. As well as this Edge Hill’s Students Union has a programme of events for welcome week (24th- 28th September 2012) to help you settle into the social life of Edge Hill and to meet many new people, some of whom will become your friends for life.

For details of the orientation session please see the PDF documents below:
