The Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre’s equipment includes:
SimMan 3G ®
This is Laerdal®’s most advanced patient simulator; an adult manikin with many realistic features, such as, being tether-less, bleeding, sweating, programmable pupillary response and eyes that blink, breathing with chest rise, heart beat and peripheral pulses, respiratory and abdominal sounds, patient voice, and vascular access. It can be used to simulate realistic patient situations such as cardiac arrest, pneumothorax, trauma, seizure, respiratory distress & difficulty airway management, overdose, anaphylaxis, and a healthy patient.
MegaCode Kelly™
This adult manikin has similar features to the VitalSim™ manikins. It has many interactive/life-like features such as breath, heart, & bowel sounds; heart rhythms & monitoring capability; pupillary changes; blood pressure; and venous access.
Nursing Ann VitalSim™ Advanced
This adult female manikin can be used for task training and simulated cases. It has many interactive/life-like features such as breath, heart and bowel sounds; blood pressure; venous access; stomas; functional bladder; intramuscular injection sites and vocal sounds.
Resusci® Junior Basic and SkillGuide™
This is a full body manikin which simulates a level of realism and features for delivering effective child CPR training. The chest rises when ventilations are delivered and has realistic compliance for practicing compressions. There are oral and nasal passages, which can simulate airway obstructions (foreign-body and anatomically). A head tilt/chin lift and jaw thrust can be practiced, as well.
MegaCode Kid VitalSim™
This manikin simulates a 6-year-old child; it has similar features to the adult VitalSim™ manikins. It can be used for teaching basic life support, intubation, venous and intraosseous access and infusion, and auscultation and recognition of bowel, breath and heart sounds, and urinary catheterization.
Nursing Kid VitalSim™
Laredal®’s newer manikin simulating a 6-year-old child; it is suitable for teaching basic life support, wound assessment and care, intubation, venous and intraosseous access and infusion, and auscultation & recognition of bowel, breath and heart sounds; blood pressure; urinary catheterization and intramuscular injections.
SimBaby™
This is Laerdal’s most advanced infant patient simulator. It has realistic anatomy and clinical functioning such as breathing with chest rise; normal and abnormal breath; difficult airway; heart & bowel sounds; blood pressure; venous access; seizure/fitting; functional bladder; intramuscular injection sites and a realistic cry and hiccup and many more functions. It can be used to simulate realistic infant patient situations such as cardiac arrest, dehydration (sunken fontanels), trauma, seizure, respiratory distress & difficulty airway management, and a healthy patient.
Laredal® ALS Baby Trainer
A portable skills trainer that simulates a three-month-old infant; it is used for practicing advanced resuscitation skills, such as airway management, vascular access, ECG monitoring and CPR.
Baby Anne™
This manikin is used to delivering effective infant CPR training. The chest rises when ventilations are delivered and has realistic compliance for practicing compressions. There are oral and nasal passages, which can simulate airway obstructions (foreign-body and anatomically). A head tilt/chin lift and jaw thrust can be practiced, as well.
Nursing Baby VitalSim™
An infant manikin designed for simulating in-hospital patient situations. It has variable fontanels; intravascular access; intraosseous access; lung heart and abdominal sounds; and some pre-recording sounds such as crying. It allows for practice of procedures such as tracheal care and suctioning; NG tube insertion, care and removal; intramuscular injections; urinary catheterization, intravenous infusion, infant BLS, as well as use in simulated patient situations.
Noelle® Maternal & Neonatal Birthing Simulator
This simulator includes features such as foetal heart sounds, head descent and cervical dilation, changeable placenta locations and complications, post-partum suturing, venous access, maternal vital signs and realistic features. It can be used for practicing Leopold manoeuvres, uncomplicated births, shoulder dystocia, and post-partum haemorrhage.
Newborn HAL®
This is a Gaumard® tether-less newborn manikin of 40 weeks gestational age with life-like features to practice assessment and care of the newborn. It has all the features of other manikins, such as breathing, cardiac function, abdominal sounds, palpable pulses, cyanosis, some motions and crying. It is possible to complete APGAR (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration) scoring, has vascular access via the umbilical veins, and monitor heart rhythms.
*These are not inclusive of all functions; procedures and/or simulations possible.
Some comments from students working with simulators:
Sim Man is very realistic, the way he talks and sweats. This added something extra to the scenario – made me feel like I was dealing with a real patient
Foundation Degree student
Very good and very realistic. All the equipment we would have needed in a real situation was available
Student nurse adult branch
Able to relate to a real live patient, made me look at the whole situation. The feedback made me realise what I could have done differently
