  content: <p>An informal talk for prospective nursing students is being held on Wednesday 6th June 2012 at the Ormskirk Campus, commencing promptly at 2pm.</p><p>Whether you wish to specialise in adult's nursing, children's nursing, mental health or learning disabilities, or you're unsure of your preferred route, it's a great opportunity to find out more about our pre-registration nursing courses that could enable you to work as a nurse in a variety of settings and be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.</p><p>The talk will include a presentation followed by an informal question and answer session.     recruiting for its Operating Department Practice (ODP) programme which is
    offered at both the University's Ormskirk and Manchester campuses.</h2><p><strong><a href="/study/courses/operating-department-practice-bsc#summary_2012">BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice</a></strong></p><p>Edge Hill University is holding an open event at its
    Manchester city centre campus for those interested in a career as an Operating
    Department Practitioner.</p><ul><li> Would you like to work in an operating theatre as
    part of a professional team at a local hospital? <br /></li>
    
    <li>Have you just left school or college, already
    working in health care, or just looking for an exciting career change?</li>
    
    <li>Are you
    looking for a new interesting, dynamic, rewarding career in healthcare?</li>
    
    </ul><p>Employment prospects in the North West area are
    extremely good and on qualification, practitioners could be looking at a
    starting salary of approximately £24,000 per year.</p><p>This is a 3 year university programme where you will spend 60% of your
    time working and learning within local hospital operating theatres. ODPs are at
    the forefront of supporting medical staff and patients before, during and after
    surgery. This is a <a href="/health/odp/">career option</a> that many people may not have considered. <br /><br />As the sole provider of ODP training in the North West of England, the
    BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practitioners programme at Edge Hill University
    has had a 100% employment rate for completing students.  <br /><br /> No tuition fees are charged for this programme.<br /><br /> This programme is NHS-funded and students receive a means-tested NHS
    Bursary. Clinical placements are available throughout Merseyside and Greater
    Manchester.</p><p><strong>Entry requirements</strong></p><ul><li> 260 UCAS points gained from: two A levels at grade C or above and five
    GCSE passes (or equivalent) grade C or above including English Language and
    Maths. Equivalent qualifications, for example BTEC Diploma minimum MMM or BTEC
    certificate minimum DD; completed Access to Higher Education course, Cert
    HE/Dip HE or previous degree level study will also be accepted</li>
    
    <li>Evidence of academic study within the last five years</li>
    
    <li>Settled UK Residency Status</li>

    <h2>Coffee, Muffins and Maximal Performance: A Personal Journey through Sports Science Research</h2><p>Lars McNaughton joined Edge Hill University's Department of Sport and Physical Activity in 2011. His areas of research include the ways in which naturally occurring substances can affect and influence sporting performance and recovery.</p><p>He is currently working with colleagues from UK universities on two projects; one is looking at the body's production of heat shock proteins and how these can influence athletes' acclimatisation process when competing in countries with different climates.</p><p>The other is studying the impact of sodium bicarbonate on performance and recovery.</p><p>Lars has published more than 200 papers in the UK and abroad, presented at numerous international conferences, and is a Fellow of the British, Australian and American Associations for Sport and Exercise Science.</p><p><strong>Programme</strong></p><ul><li>5.00pm - Arrival Drinks</li>

    <h2>Communication: The Key To Success - The 6th International Conference</h2><h2>Keynote Speaker: Professor Temple Grandin</h2><p>Professor Temple Grandin is inarguably the most accomplished and well known adult with autism in the world.  She hasn’t let autism prevent her from living life to the fullest and has helped to redefine the perception of what is possible for autistics.  Temple has been featured in major television programmes and national publications and is a prominent author and speaker on the subject of autism, telling her story in the book Emergence: Labelled Autistic.  In 2010 the biopic film of Temple’s early life was nominated for, and won, several Emmy awards.  She presently works as an Associate Professor at Colorado State University.</p><p>If you are a relative or professional living or working with a young person who is diagnosed with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome you will know that the barriers within education, employment, and social situations are significant. The impact that the complexities of Autism and Asperger's Syndrome has upon life situations is very real.</p><p>Communication is a key factor in addressing the needs of such young people and by addressing this issue, windows of opportunity are opened. This enables young people to progress, in terms of furthering their education and employment options, by improving self-esteem and confidence or simply by offering an opportunity to feel included in society, to feel valued and understood.<br /><br />This conference is a collaborative venture between Belle Vue House Assessment Centre and Edge Hill University.</p><h2>Target Audience</h2><ul><li>Teachers, Support Assistants</li>

The abstract should not be more than 300 words in length (papers describing work in progress are eligible).  </p><p>For

    <p>Giles Fraser presents The Chancellor's Lecture at Edge Hill University on Friday 15th June 2012, with a talk entitled 'Moral Leadership in Changing Times'.</p><p>Currently parish priest at St Mary's Newington in London, Giles Fraser is best known as the former Canon Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral, where he fulfilled the role of a canon residentiary with special responsibility for contemporary ethics and engagement with the City of London as a financial centre. He was also the director of St Paul's Institute. He resigned from his post in October 2011 following the Cathedral's decision to take legal action to evict protestors from the anti-capitalist Occupy London movement who were camped outside the iconic London landmark.</p><p>Giles has held posts at St Mary's Putney as Team Rector, at Wadham College, Oxford University as chaplain and lecturer in Philosophy and as the curate of All Saints in Streetly. He is also the founder and president of the Inclusive Church and campaigns for lesbian and gay inclusion within the church.     <p>The United Nations has declared 2012 to be the International Year of Co‑operatives. In celebration, this major international forum will discuss how co-operatives in every sphere of social, economic, political and cultural life can emerge globally in the coming century as a participatory, democratic alternative to competitive, private, profit-driven, liberal market democracies.</p><p>The Co‑operative College, University of Liverpool, Manchester Metropolitan University, Liverpool John Moores University, Edge Hill University and the University of Central Lancashire are organising this major interdisciplinary conference, with support from the Co-operative Group.</p><p>The conference will be of interest to co‑operative members and employees, interested members of the public, public sector professionals, the voluntary sector, community activists and educationalists as well as researchers and academics in business studies, community, economics, education, health, history, political science, and sociology. It will explore the major contributions that a renewed vision and practice of co-operative forms of organisation can make to people everywhere, in their everyday lives, asking:</p><ul><li>What would a renewed vision of co-operation for the 21<sup>st</sup> century, grounded in the creativity, energy and hopes of the people for a better life look like? </li>

    <h2>A Sort of Wisdom - Exploring the Legacy of Primo Levi</h2><p>An international conference commemorating the 25th anniversary of Primo Levi's death is taking place at Edge Hill University from 6th-7th July 2012.</p><p>Primo Levi (1919-1987) was born and lived his entire life in or near Turin, with the exception of the years 1944-45, when he was captured as an anti-fascist partisan, deported to Auschwitz, and then released into war-torn Europe. After liberation, with ‘a torrent of things to tell the civilised world’ and ‘the tattooed number on [his] arm burning like a sore’ he wrote a series of remarkable books, including <em>If This is a Man</em>, <em>The Periodic Table</em>, and <em>The Drowned and the Saved</em>. He is now viewed as not only one of the key literary figures of the twentieth century and one of the most important survivor-writers of the Holocaust, but for many he is an ethical writer of great depth and even a subtle and humane 'political philosopher'.</p><p>Although he famously asked his readers not to treat him as a ‘prophet, oracle, or seer,’ Primo Levi also suspected that there was ‘a sort of wisdom that seeps through from my books which I don't feel within myself.’ What sort of wisdom do we find in Levi and how can we critically appropriate his legacy without encouraging what Bryan Cheyette has called 'reductive discourses which have engulfed Levi’s life and work' and risk turning him into a 'saint-like figure'?</p><h2>Keynote Speakers</h2><h3>Norman Geras</h3><ul><li>'Hope, Shame and Resentment: Primo Levi and Jean Améry'</li>

Josephine the captain's daughter is in love with Ralph a common sailor, but her father wants her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. The couple are caught as they elope from the ship and Ralph is locked in the ship's dungeon. Only when certain revelations are made by Buttercup, a dockside vendor, can everyone end up freely marrying their true hearts' loves.</p><p>This wonderful comic opera gets the complete Illyria treatment, faithfully performed by a reduced cast on a beautiful nautical set, and accompanied by a Musical Director on keyboard.</p><p>In 2011 Illyria raised the bar by becoming the first and only major UK open-air touring theatre to add Opera to its regular season.
