Buzz Comedy presents Stand-up Comedy at the Rose Theatre. With comedians, Alex Boardman, Him and Me, Adam Staunton, and Helen Keeler.

Alex Boardman
Alex Boardman is now one of the most sought after acts in the country due to his ability to interact with any audience and to seemingly conjure something out of nothing.  His free flowing style and natural charm breeze through in performances. However there is often a hard-hitting edge to his material that acts as counter balance to this.

"Call the cops, double, double funny" - Shaun Ryder, Happy Mondays and Daily Sport

Him and Me
Him and Me are Shea Taylor and Steve Langstaff, a comedy sketch double act best known for writing and starring in sketches for BBC2‘s Dick and Dom‘s Funny Business and for the hit YouTube video Lady Gaga Telephone Parody received over 2.5 million hits.  Described as a more accessible version of Reeves and Mortimer, their style has seen them turn their collective hand to writing, acting, live comedy and presenting.   Shea even used to present a mid-morning current affairs programme on an Asian channel on Sky, he was the Asian community's answer to Philip Schofield....Steve hasn't been anyone's answer to anything.

Adam Staunton
Since his first gig in December 2007, Adam Staunton has developed a confident and assured delivery that has seen him share bills with the likes of John Bishop, Phil Nicol, and Sarah Millican.

"superb comic timing and stagecraft" - Graham Gilbert, Southportforums.com

"Short, likeable stage persona with unbelievable confidence, keep an eye out for him!" - Sam Avery

Compere....

Helen Keeler
Helen Keeler is a delightfully dark and deadpan new comedy star from the Wirral. She was a painfully shy, freakishly well-behaved and Catholic-guilt-ridden child who dreamed of growing up to be a blonde Russian spy who spent her days draped in James Bond's doorway. It didn't happen. She is now at the point where thoughts of being a productive, upstanding member of society have completely left the building. She never again wants to work for a living and instead plans to either be paid for creative endeavours she finds fun and satisfying, or starve to death.

Probe Dance Company present May at the Rose Theatre. A tale of a passionate relationship between two misfits whose coming together is both fairy tale and gritty realism.

Tickets £9.00 / £7.00 concessions

May is the critically acclaimed and daring work of dance theatre from Antonia Grove's award-winning company Probe written by Tim Crouch and directed by Pete Shenton.

Told through a montage of dance, words and music, May is a tale of a passionate relationship between two misfits whose coming together brings them both close to destruction. Their mental unravelling pitches gritty realism against beguiling fairy tale, with comic interludes framing the piece in the here and now.  Performed by the inimitable Grove whose career credits read like a who's who of British performance, accompanied by Place-Prize winner Ben Duke (Lost Dog) and musician Scott Smith, May also delivers some of Probe's most exciting duet work to date.

"So sexy that it should have come with a health warning'" - ballet.co.uk

"‘Recommended, especially for anyone interested in boundary-blurring dance-theatre pinned to new writing"  - The Times

There is a talkback session with the dancers after the performance.

Theatre in the Quarter present Star of Wonder at the Rose Theatre. A magical music hall mystery story. Featuring magician Paul Dabek. Suitable for all ages.

Tickets £9.00 / £7.00 concessions

On Christmas Eve, in 1899, under the watchful eyes of a packed house in a local music hall, the impossible happened! The events of that night were witnessed at close hand by a young stage hand who later described the act of the magician known as the Star of Egypt, as ‘beguiling and puzzling', and her intriguing finale as ‘the greatest illusion ever'.

The Star of Egypt was a rare thing: a Victorian lady magician who was both alluring and mysterious.  In her grand tour of 1899, the Christmas Eve performance was her swan song - the stage hand watching from the wings later swore that this was a night in which the magic was real. Certainly those who witnessed it never forgot it, but they seldom spoke of it again...

Star of Wonder is a musical magical mystery for all ages. It features professional magician, Paul Dabek, and is created by the Theatre in the Quarter team (writer Helen Newall, Southampton's Nuffield Theatre director, Russ Tunney, and music director/composer Matt Baker) whose previous shows have enchanted audiences across the North West region.

Short Cuts Cinema screens Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Tomas Alfredson, 2011) on Wednesday 15th February (new date) at 7.30pm in the Studio Theatre.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is based on the John le Carre's Cold War spy novel. Set in the 1970s, George Smiley (Gary Oldman, The Dark Knight), a recently retired MI6 agent, is doing his best to adjust to a life outside the secret service. However, when a disgraced agent reappears with information concerning a mole at the heart of the Circus, Smiley is drawn back into the murky field of espionage. Tasked with investigating which of his trusted former colleagues has chosen to betray him and their country, Smiley narrows his search to four suspects - all experienced, urbane, successful agents - but past histories, rivalries and friendships make it far from easy to pinpoint the man who is eating away at the heart of the British establishment.

Steve Hewitt - Informing Controversy: The Renewed Relevance of Informers to Counter-Terrorism Operations and the Controversy Surrounding Their Use

Dr Steve Hewitt is a Senior Lecturer in American and Canadian Studies at the University of Birmingham and author of Snitch: A History of the Modern Intelligence Informer (Continuum, 2010) and The British War on Terror: Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism on the Home Front since 9-11 (Continuum, 2008).

In his lecture, he will examine the use of informers in counter-terrorism intelligence. Since the September 11 attacks, there has been recognition from Western intelligence agencies and the police that technological surveillance has limitations when dealing with close-knit groups of individuals linguistically and culturally different from agency officers working on counter terrorism operations.  The use of informers, which has grown in both the US and UK in recent years, presents challenges of its own, particularly with relations between security agencies and ‘suspect communities'. This talk will examine the renewed emphasis on informers, including the historical context, reasons for their expanded use, and the implications surrounding this technique.

Spike Theatre in association with Unity Theatre and the Met present The Games at the Rose Theatre. An ‘undiscovered' Aristophanes comedy about three Greek nobodies.

Tickets £9.00 / £7.00 concessions

An ‘undiscovered' Aristophanes comedy - the story of three Greek nobodies caught up in a celestial bet between Zeus, Hera and Hercules. Our unwitting heroes: Stanzas (a terrible poet), Darius (the runt of the litter) and Hermaphrodite (born a girl) travel to compete in the ancient Olympics and take on the heroes of the sporting world with epic results for mankind and realistic willies.

Learn the prophecy of the Oracle!
Amaze at the powers bestowed from the Gods!
Understand the nature of human endurance!
Goggle at the sights in the gymnasium!
Have a journey of Olympic fun!

The Games incorporates clown, original music, song and shadow puppetry and is hilarious from beginning to end.  Suitable for aged 12 years plus.

"Definitely triple gold." - The Stage

Peter Jaeger is Canadian poet, literary critic and text-based artist now living in the UK. He is the author of five books of poetry, including Rapid Eye Movement (2009) and The Persons (2011). He has recently collaborated with the video artist Kaz to produce the film Nozomi, which was exhibited at the Bury Text Festival in 2011, and he is currently working on a critical monograph on John Cage. Peter uses found texts to write through the words of others: those protagonists who have animated his imagination and left their traces in newspapers, emails, diaries, books (from literature to philosophy), and in all the countless ephemera with which the externalised inner drama of our lives plays out. He teaches poetry and literary theory at Roehampton University in London.

Buzz Comedy present Stand-up Comedy at the Rose Theatre. With Sully O'Sullivan, El Purnell, Jay Hampson, and Phil Chapman.

Sully O'Sullivan
Kiwi comedian Sully O'Sullivan summarises everything any woman has ever needed to know in under 60 seconds. He's been declared a highlight of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival by The New Zealand Herald, a highlight of the Glasgow International Comedy Festival by The Scotsman, won Canada's Masters of the Universe Improv Competition, and featured on Australian TV's The Comedy Channel.

"a wicked sense of humour" BBC UK

El Purnell
Ecuador's top comedian El Purnell is a highly interactive and energetic act, unique on the comedy circuit. Delivering his act in his native Spanish he captivates the audience with confidence, bravado, and high-levels of interaction and participation to create hysteria! He brings something very different to any comedy bill. The energy build-up is significant, with the audience on a major high with his musical close.

"El Purnell is the best and most original character act I have seen in years"  Urban Comedy

Jay Hampson
28 year-old Jay's youthful looks betray a clever and sometimes rude mind.  Based in Manchester, Jay possesses excellent timing, a laid back delivery and intelligent material, drawing on topics as varied as his personal battle with social class, to the sexual inadequacy of endangered species. Fluent use of language coupled with cutting guttural quips, Jay puts a well thought out spin on a variety of different topics.

Compere....

Phil Chapman
Phil Chapman draws on a huge range of cleverly written strong material to wow his audience, but has similarly penned a large number of quick gags in case needs must. His material often includes topical subjects, ensuring the audience never see the same set twice. He has earned himself a name from being able to deal with the harshest of rooms, tear down barriers with punters and win the respect of the most stubborn of audience-members.

"Cool as a cucumber... has every audience eating out of his hands!" Beyond a Joke, Liverpool

Short Cuts Cinema screens We Need to Talk About Kevin (Lynne Ramsey, 2011) on Wednesday 7th March (new date) at 7.30pm in the Studio Theatre

We Need to Talk About Kevin is a 2003 novel about a fictional school massacre. It is written from the perspective of the killer's mother, Eva Khatchadourian, and documents her attempt to come to terms with her son Kevin, and the murders he committed.

What happens when bad children happen to good parents? Does it mean they are not, in fact, as good as they had imagined themselves to be? Although told in the first person as a series of letters from Eva to her husband, the novel's structure also strongly resembles that of a thriller. The novel, Lionel Shriver's seventh, won the 2005 Orange Prize, a UK-based prize for female authors of any nationality writing in English.

John Finucane - Pat Finucane: Collusion and the Struggle for Truth and Justice

John Finucane is a Belfast-based solicitor and son of prominent human rights lawyer, Pat Finucane, who was shot dead by loyalists in collusion with British Security Forces in 1989. John campaigns with his mother and Pat's widow, Geraldine and other members of the Finucane family and supporters for a full public inquiry into Pat Finucane's death.

In 1989 the leading human rights lawyer, Pat Finucane, was shot dead by loyalist paramilitaries in front of his family in their Belfast home. Since then, Pat's family has campaigned tirelessly for the full truth of British security force collusion and involvement in his death to be revealed. Following an agreement between the British and Irish Governments, an initial inquiry held in 2004 by retired Canadian judge Peter Cory, found evidence of state collusion in the murder of Pat Finucane and recommended a full public inquiry be held. In October 2011 David Cameron invited the Finucane family to Downing Street to tell them that he was putting in place a review and that no public inquiry would be held. John Finucane, Pat Finucane's son and himself now a lawyer, will talk about the importance of his father's case, the significance of state collusion and why the family's long fight for truth and justice goes on.

The Urban Folk Quartet return to the Rose to perform their high-energy show of grooving, globally-influenced folk music that will take your breath away.

Tickets £11.00 / £9.00 concessions

Making a welcome return to the Rose, four highly accomplished musicians, a dozen instruments and four voices come together to put on a high-energy show of grooving, globally-influenced folk music that will take your breath away.

Blistering beats, burning fiddle tunes and elements from all four corners of the globe delivered with boundless energy and humour. It's true fusion - not just the careless splicing together of genres.  It's the rich palette of musical experiences brought to the band by its members that give the UFQ it's unique sound and approach. Having worked across the world with acts such as The Chieftains, Bellowhead, The Albion Band and Carlos Nunez, it's easy to see the folk pedigree.

Fuel present Inua Ellams' Black T-Shirt Collection at the Rose Theatre. Born in Nigeria, and brought up in the UK, Inua tells a story about where a T-shirt comes from and what it means.

Tickets: £9.00 / £7.00 concessions

Poet and performer Inua Ellams was born in Nigeria in 1984, and moved to the UK as a teenager. Inua's work merges visual art, spoken word and theatre, and he is known for his iconic imagery, beauty and attention to detail.  He writes about his upbringing, the experience of immigration, and of living in the UK today, bringing words to life with pace, rhythm, cadence and intonation.

A T-Shirt is something most people have. It is a common denominator like a pair of blue jeans or a pair of Converse All Stars. In Black T-Shirt Collection Inua tells a story about where a T-Shirt comes from and what it means.

"Ellams' evocative writing conjures a Nigeria where myth and magic sit casually alongside everyday life." - The Guardian

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (Troy Nixey, 2010) will be screened on Wednesday 14th March at 7.30pm in the Studio Theatre

Producer Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) and Mark Johnson (Chronicles of Narnia) join forces to deliver a tale of hair-raising, spine-chilling horror. A lonely, withdrawn child has just arrived in Rhode Island to live with her father Alex (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes) at the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the sprawling estate, the young girl discovers a hidden basement and unwittingly lets loose a race of ancient, dark-dwelling creatures.

Short Cuts Cinema screens Hanna (Joe Wright, 2011) will be screened on Wednesday 21st March at 7.30pm in the Studio Theatre.

Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) is a teenage girl. Uniquely, she has the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a soldier; these come from being raised by her father (Eric Bana), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Finland. Living a life unlike any other teenager, her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe while eluding agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative with secrets of her own (Cate Blanchett). As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.

British audiences are relatively unfamiliar with the dramas of Eastern Europe, but both A Dybbuk and The Wedding would be familiar in any theatre in Poland or the Ukraine. These are two great Symbolist dramas from the beginning of the last century.

In each we see a village caught between the Old World and the New. In different ways each play presents us with a phantasmagoria of ghosts and spirits come to test their respective traditional communities. In each the weight of history, of collective story, hangs heavy over what Wyspiański calls a "world of magic spells and charms" of prayers and curses. The subtitle ‘Between Two Worlds" could apply to both as they explore heaven and hell, ancient and modern, in poetry, dance and song. As Ansky says:

"The Dead should not be excluded from any celebration"

Short Cuts Cinema screens The Guard (Michael McDonagh, 2011) on Wednesday 28th March at 7.30pm in the Studio Theatre.

In this Irish black comedy, Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson, Gangs of New York) is a small-town Irish cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought straight-laced FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda) to his door. A murder which appears to be the work of an occult serial killer reveals a web of bribery and blackmail and killings ensue. Boyle and Everett form an unlikely alliance and with the unwitting help of the IRA bring about a bloody denouement.

Short Cuts Cinema screens Anonymous (Roland Emmerich, 2011) on Wednesday 18th April (new date) at 7.30pm in the Studio Theatre.

Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Sigmund Freud, namely: who actually created the body of work credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature.

Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when scandalous political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles lusting for the power of the throne were brought to light in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

Stars Ryhs Ifans, Venessa Regrave, David Thewlis, and Rafe Spall as William Shakespeare

Small Mercies present Our Lady of the Goldfinches by Jane McNulty at the Rose Theatre. Directed by Bill Hopkinson. The story of Jean McConville's murder by the IRA and her daughter Helen's attempt to make sense of her death.

Tickets £9.00 / £7.00 concessions.

On an anonymous beach, where sea gives way to land, 3 characters meet. This radical new play examines sacrifice, martyrdom and the redemptive quality of love.

Our Lady of the Goldfinches is the story of Jean McConville's murder by the IRA and of her daughter Helen's attempt to make sense of her death.  After 30 years of searching, the Good Friday agreement prompted the IRA to disclose the location of Jean's grave.

This is a physical production which incorporates a bold multi-media score to animate the ‘fog of war'.  From the sounds and images of Bloody Sunday to the felling of the watchtowers, from traditional music to live mixed samples, this haunting play evokes a lonely beach in County Louth as a holy place in a Last Rites of Reconciliation.

Communication: The Key To Success - The 6th International Conference

Keynote Speaker: Professor Temple Grandin

Professor Temple Grandin is inarguably the most accomplished and well known adult with autism in the world.  She hasn’t let autism prevent her from living life to the fullest and has helped to redefine the perception of what is possible for autistics.  Temple has been featured in major television programmes and national publications and is a prominent author and speaker on the subject of autism, telling her story in the book Emergence: Labelled Autistic.  In 2010 the biopic film of Temple’s early life was nominated for, and won, several Emmy awards.  She presently works as an Associate Professor at Colorado State University.

If you are a relative or professional living or working with a young person who is diagnosed with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome you will know that the barriers within education, employment, and social situations are significant. The impact that the complexities of Autism and Asperger's Syndrome has upon life situations is very real.

Communication is a key factor in addressing the needs of such young people and by addressing this issue, windows of opportunity are opened. This enables young people to progress, in terms of furthering their education and employment options, by improving self-esteem and confidence or simply by offering an opportunity to feel included in society, to feel valued and understood.

This conference is a collaborative venture between Belle Vue House Assessment Centre and Edge Hill University.

This 2nd Annual Conference, hosted by Edge Hill University's PE and School Sport Forum, is an opportunity for teachers, University lecturers and Higher Education students to share findings from both academic research and current school-based practice.

With cuts in government funding and a new National Curriculum looming PE and School Sport is undoubtedly facing a time of considerable change. This conference will discuss how the PE profession should react to such challenges both from a national and international perspective. Delegates are invited to just attend and/or contribute towards this general theme.

The United Nations has declared 2012 to be the International Year of Co‑operatives. In celebration, this major international forum will discuss how co-operatives in every sphere of social, economic, political and cultural life can emerge globally in the coming century as a participatory, democratic alternative to competitive, private, profit-driven, liberal market democracies.

The Co‑operative College, University of Liverpool, Manchester Metropolitan University, Liverpool John Moores University, Edge Hill University and the University of Central Lancashire are organising this major interdisciplinary conference, with support from the Co-operative Group.

The conference will be of interest to co‑operative members and employees, interested members of the public, public sector professionals, the voluntary sector, community activists and educationalists as well as researchers and academics in business studies, community, economics, education, health, history, political science, and sociology. It will explore the major contributions that a renewed vision and practice of co-operative forms of organisation can make to people everywhere, in their everyday lives, asking:

The UN Year of Co‑operatives is an important milestone in the recognition of co‑operation as a global alternative to unfettered, profit-driven private capitalism. The scope for extending the role of the co-operative, together with a vision for co‑operatives to lead the way in raising people out of poverty everywhere, is at the heart of the UN's decision to place co‑operation at the centre of planning for the future.

A Sort of Wisdom - Exploring the Legacy of Primo Levi

An international conference commemorating the 25th anniversary of Primo Levi's death is taking place at Edge Hill University from 6th-7th July 2012.

Primo Levi (1919-1987) was born and lived his entire life in or near Turin, with the exception of the years 1944-45, when he was captured as an anti-fascist partisan, deported to Auschwitz, and then released into war-torn Europe. After liberation, with ‘a torrent of things to tell the civilised world’ and ‘the tattooed number on [his] arm burning like a sore’ he wrote a series of remarkable books, including If This is a Man, The Periodic Table, and The Drowned and the Saved. He is now viewed as not only one of the key literary figures of the twentieth century and one of the most important survivor-writers of the Holocaust, but for many he is an ethical writer of great depth and even a subtle and humane 'political philosopher'.

Although he famously asked his readers not to treat him as a ‘prophet, oracle, or seer,’ Primo Levi also suspected that there was ‘a sort of wisdom that seeps through from my books which I don't feel within myself.’ What sort of wisdom do we find in Levi and how can we critically appropriate his legacy without encouraging what Bryan Cheyette has called 'reductive discourses which have engulfed Levi’s life and work' and risk turning him into a 'saint-like figure'?

Illyria Theatre Company present an outdoor performance of HMS Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan in the Rock Garden at the Rose Theatre.

Tickets £15.00 / £13.00 concessions.

I am the lowliest tar that sails the water
And you, proud maiden, are my captain's daughter!

Set on board the warship HMS Pinafore, the opera cheerfully mocks such Great British institutions as Class, Patriotism and the Royal Navy. Josephine the captain's daughter is in love with Ralph a common sailor, but her father wants her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. The couple are caught as they elope from the ship and Ralph is locked in the ship's dungeon. Only when certain revelations are made by Buttercup, a dockside vendor, can everyone end up freely marrying their true hearts' loves.

This wonderful comic opera gets the complete Illyria treatment, faithfully performed by a reduced cast on a beautiful nautical set, and accompanied by a Musical Director on keyboard.

In 2011 Illyria raised the bar by becoming the first and only major UK open-air touring theatre to add Opera to its regular season. The ticket sales, acclaim and feedback from last season's "The Pirates of Penzance" all vouch for its enormous success.

This is an OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE. Come prepared for the elements!  Bring a picnic if you like and a low backed chair or rug to sit on.

For details of what's on this season at the Rose Theatre, visit the Rose Theatre website.

If you're interested in screenings of great films, see this season's Short Cuts line-up in the Studio Theatre.
