Maurice Watkins, a Director of Manchester United and Senior Partner at leading law firm Brabners Chaffe Street, will share his views with Professor Stephen Weatherill, of the University of Oxford, and Ken Foster of the University of Westminster.
The debate is entitled 'The Future of European Sports Law: The Lisbon Treaty and Sport'. The Treaty came into effect on 1 December 2009 with the aim of reforming the EU and making it more efficient, democratic and transparent. The three speakers will be discussing the meaning of a clause in the Treaty which refers to 'the specific nature of sport'.
The event has been organised by Professor Richard Parrish, Director for the Centre for Sports Law Research at Edge Hill. He said: "Since the Bosman judgment the governing bodies of sport have lobbied for a sports article in the Treaty as a means of protecting the specificities of sport from the application of European law. Our speakers will debate the impact of the Lisbon article on current issues in European sports law such as the home-grown players rule and measures designed to promote financial fair play in football."
Maurice Watkins is a prominent name in English football. He has handled numerous high value soccer transfers and represents international clubs and players before all of the sport's disciplinary bodies. He is a regular speaker on football issues at home and abroad, and holds a number of key positions including Director of the British Association for Sport and Law and Member of the FA Premier League Legal Advisory Group.
Professor Stephen Weatherill is the Jacques Delors Professor of European Community Law at the University of Oxford, and Director of the Institute of European and Comparative Law. He is a leading international authority on the law of the European Union and has, for many years, provided the most authoritative commentary on the relationship between sport and EU law.
Ken Foster pioneered the academic discipline of sports law. He was the first UK academic to offer a sports law module to students in 1987, while working at the University of Warwick. His research into professional sport in the European Union, the football transfer system and the legal regulation of international sporting federations has been widely published.
This free public event takes place on Wednesday March 17 at noon in the Business and Law Lecture Theatre. If you would like to attend, email Professor Parrish at parrishr@edgehill.ac.uk or call 01695 657609.

Edge Hill University Performing Arts Students present Spring Awakening and Lulu: A Monster Tragedy, by Frank Wedekind.
Spring Awakening is performed on Thursday 18th March, 7:30pm and Saturday 20th March, 2:30pm. Lulu: A Monster Tragedy (translated by Edward Bond and Elizabeth Bond- Pablé) is performed Friday 19th March, 7:30pm and Saturday 20th March, also 7:30pm.
Frank Wedekind's legacy includes two of the seminal works of modern theatre. Lulu and Spring Awakening are products of a 19th century mind yet remain revolutionary masterpieces.
The playwright Edward Bond (here co-translator) calls Lulu "the first modern play". Wedekind's radicalism in these works is not merely a revolution of theatrical form. He presents unflinching examinations of young people's lives and passions, which retain all their power to shock.
Neither play relies on a mere series of gratuitous effects: rather we are reminded of the terrible deformation of children's lives by the actions of adults and the hypocrisy of their institutions.
Through exploring and embodying these classics of modern drama, we hope our students will speak to immediate and pressing concerns which touch us deeply, mindful of what Wedekind taught us all: "the flesh has its own spirit".
Suitable for age 12 plus.

In Nazi occupied France, young Jewish refugee Soshanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Soshanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organises a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemies as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Soshanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own...

Despite threats from his wife and bank manager, in May 2005 middle-aged Kenny Noonan travels to Istanbul to watch Liverpool play AC Milan in the Champions' League final. He carries the scars of thirty years as a Red - Heysel, Hillsborough, Alex Ferguson - and of living in a city which has been demonised. What happened to Liverpool FC in the second half is legend. What happened to Kenny in the AC Milan directors' box is stranger than fiction.
Beating Berlusconi! is based on the now famous true story of a real Liverpool fan who ended up sitting next to Silvio Berlusconi at the Attaturk Stadium.
It's a story of love and friendship, of defeat and of victory.
Suitable for age 16 plus. Contains strong language.

The guest speaker at our second networking event will be Peter Davies. Since graduating from Edge Hill in the 1970's, Peter has had a varied career, working at Microsoft, IBM and, latterly, as European Legal Director at Apple. Since leaving Apple, he has held a visiting fellowship at the Oxford Internet Institute at Balliol College, Oxford, and is an external advisor to the UK internet domain name registry Nominet and the European Commission.
Peter will be offering advice about making bold career steps and how to develop your career in a recession. He will reveal some of the secrets of the success of some of the high profile characters he has worked with, which include Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft and Steve Jobs, Chief Executive of Apple.
Following Peter's talk there will be the opportunity to informally network with other delegates which includes Edge Hill alumni, university staff and the business community.
You and a colleague are invited to attend the event, which includes drinks and canapés and the chance to tour the new Business, Law and Criminology building.
To book your place at this event, contact Caroline Mitchell, Affinity Officer, on 01695 584861 or email alumni@edgehill.ac.uk.
On the evening we will circulate a guest list - to be included, let us know your name, job title, company and email. Please indicate if you do not want these details made available to other invitees. We look forward to seeing you there!

Emily Blunt delivers an incredibly compelling performance as Queen Victoria in the turbulent first years of her reign. Rupert Friend portrays Prince Albert, the suitor who wins her heart and becomes her partner in one of history's greatest romances. Together they capture the joy of two young people whose destinies have been preordained and whose decisions have been made for them, realising that their mutual regard is something all their own. This is a love story, set amongst all the intrigue of the court and also features Miranda Richardson, Paul Bettany and Jim Broadbent.

Based on a Russian folktale about a prince who marries a strange Frog Bride. The Puppet Lab combines storytelling and puppetry in this show full of warmth and humour. The Russian tale tells of three brothers who are ordered by their father to find a bride. Each prince must shoot an arrow into the air, and marry whoever finds it. Perfect princesses return the arrows to the eldest two brothers. Unfortunately, a frog finds the third brother's arrow. Two superb puppeteers lead the audience through the trials and tribulations of the Frog in this re-worked Puppet Lab classic.
Suitable for audiences aged 3 - 7 years old and their families.

A deliciously dark operetta for curious children. Have you ever done things your parents told you not to do? Have you swallowed the pips of an apple and waited for a tree to grow in your belly? Have you made a face when the wind changed? Or turned your back on the sea?
In Bobby Rogers' town everyone lives very normal lives. But Bobby has noticed that a child who was there one minute is gone the next. Disappeared. So he digs a hole through the earth. All the way to kangaroos and upsidedowness. And he may have stayed forever there. But vanishing kids does not seem fair. And there is nothing so fun as a grudge to bear. So one day Bobby Rogers returns to Upper Crumble to settle the score...
Suitable for everyone aged 8 years plus.

Original music by Jez Lowe (Radio 2 Sony Academy Award winner).
Some girls just aren't cut out for farming...
It's 1942, and there are some new arrivals in the village. They're turning heads and breaking hearts as the fine girls of the Women's Land Army take to the hills. Buff is a city girl dreaming of being ‘just like Vera Lynn', while Biddy is a country girl who is ‘now't but a hopeless romantic'. Join them on a journey of blisters, back-ache and banter as they learn all there is to know about working on the land.
This brand new comedy two-hander celebrates the highs and lows of the wonderful women who helped keep Britain fed during World War II, set against a backdrop of glorious music of the age, as well as new tunes by songwriter Jez Lowe.
"This is a production brimming with creativity and talent. If you get the chance to go and see this do, as it is a joyful and uplifting experience" - York Press.

Two women and an incoherent male live together but can't quite work out why. The radio is broken, another mysterious relative has died and there's a parcel on the step. It's like this every day.

Conjuring an evocative world of mutinous rag-toys, domestic wormholes and poignant forgotten dreams, Clunk is a darkly rebellious feast of unhinged humour, charming puppetry and existential angst.
Following a hugely successful premiere at Unity Theatre in 2009, The Suitcase Ensemble's absurd and refreshing comedy has been delightfully reworked with input from puppeteer-designer Liz Walker (FaultyOptic).

Terry Gilliam brings his trademark visual panache to this wonderful fantasy-adventure, which features the final performance of the late Heath Ledger. It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary 'Imaginarium', a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. With Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell assuming Ledger's mantle, Parnassus is a welcome return to form for Gilliam. Not to be missed.

A delightful and playful interpretation of a well-known tale - with porridge and bears and one-two-three chairs. A tale that's not too BIG and not too small but just right. Mind you, telling this story is not so easy when it's wintertime and the bears won't wake up - Zzzzzzzzz - what do bears dream about? But spring in the air puts a spring in all our steps and one little girl with golden hair is always a step ahead. And when Small Bear gets lost, we all have to go on a bear hunt!
With original music, this play is for everyone who can count to three - especially if you're aged 3 to 7!

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde promises to take the audience to the dark side in a thrilling, gripping and highly entertaining reinvention of this classic tale.
Set in a Whitechapel tavern in 1888, a versatile cast tell the gruesome story of Dr Jekyll and his charismatic alter-ego using only the things you would find in a pub. Barrels, tankards, darts, brasses, bar stools, soda syphons, billiard cues, yards of ale and even Aunt Sally are used to create the physical world of Victorian London with great ingenuity and imagination. Set against the background of the Whitechapel murders (which caused the original London stage production to be cancelled) the Company explore the novel's themes of duality, identity and weird science in their highly physical, accessible and entertaining style.

Los Angeles, 1928. A single mother returns from work to find her nine-year-old son gone. Five months later, a boy is found in Illinois who fits the description; he says he's her son but she insists he's not her boy. The police dismiss her as either a liar or hysterical. When she joins a minister in his public criticism of the police, they in turn use government power to silence and intimidate her. Meanwhile, a Canadian boy is found in a dilapidated range; the youth tells a grisly tale. Starring Angelina Jolie and Gattlin Griffith.

Gothic scholars are increasingly welcoming historicised studies of Gothic and literary criticism examining how Gothic tropes and modes are inflected for a particular time and place. Even more specifically, critics call for studies not only of historicised Gothic, but of localised Gothic.
In a discussion of these recent trends, for example, Roger Luckhurst suggests that Gothic criticism pay fresh attention to the way location functions, for:
'it is worth recalling that ghosts are held to haunt specific locales, are tied to what late Victorian psychical researchers ... termed "phantasmogenetic centres". This might suggest that the ghosts of London are different from those of Paris, or those of California.'
This conference takes the specificity of urban ‘phantasmogenetic centres' as an organising principle, aiming to explore particular representations of urban gothic in literature, film, television and graphic novels.
Keynote speakers include Professor Sue Zlosnik (MMU), Dr Ben Highmore (Sussex), as well the illustrator and graphic artist, Gerry Gapinski.
We invite abstracts for 20-minute papers focusing on identifying, untangling or savouring gothic representations of particular cities, both past and present.
Proposals are welcomed on, but not limited to, the following topics:

The North Gothic Network is a regional network of the International Gothic Association (IGA). The IGA was established in June 1991, uniting teachers, scholars and students from around the world interested in Gothic culture, fiction, drama, poetry, art and film, from the eighteenth century onwards. Its purpose is to exchange and expand knowledge of and research on the Gothic as widely and effectively as possible.
The North Gothic Network (NGN) builds upon the IGA's aims and objectives, fostering the exchange of ideas among Gothic scholars from the region through seminars, workshops and conferences.

Following a sell out success at the Fury Factory Festival in San Francisco the Company are now back at the Rose Theatre.
Je Suis Dead is a show about inheritance, or everything we carry with us from our families and cultures. What stories are we living which are not our own? What happens when inherited lines meet?
Three strangers are thrown together in the aftermath of a near fatal train crash. In their vulnerable post-crash state, unknown ancestral figures step through the veil of their once ordered lives. Each has a story to tell from the past, which reveals family secrets and intrigues that intermingle and connect together like a twisted puzzle with the changing realities of the present day characters - three people desperately clinging on to who they believe they once were.
There will be a post show discussion after this performance.

If you are a relative or professional living or working with a young person who is diagnosed with autism or Asperger's syndrome you will know that the barriers within education, employment, and social situations are significant. The impact that the complexities of autism and Asperger's syndrome has upon life situations is very real. Communication is a key factor in addressing the needs of such young people and by addressing this issue, windows of opportunity are opened. This enables young people to progress, in terms of furthering their education and employment options, by improving self-esteem and confidence or simply by offering an opportunity to feel included in society, to feel valued and understood.
The conference is a collaborative venture between Edge Hill University and Pontville School, an independent school for communication impaired children and young people aged 7 to 19 years.

Using three case studies, the workshop aims to review an Open Content Literacy Framework for the support staff wishing to create, reuse or repurpose digital teaching and learning content with a view to making it freely available.
The evening seminar, also on Wednesday 2nd June 2010, starting at 6pm, provides an opportunity for delegates to engage with an expert panel in a BBC Question Time Format, with a panel consisting of professors and members of national bodies engaged with the enhancement agenda in higher education in this fast evolving area. The seminar includes a two-course hot meal from 8pm.
The conference is open to everyone working in further and higher education, both nationally and internationally. You can register a place at the conference by completing the online electronic registration form.

We ask the question are our leaders prepared for the changes ahead? We will consider how midwives have commissioned services in order to create a new way of working. There will be a discussion about how change will be facilitated to promote choice and how some services have adapted to address the needs of a changing population. The feelings of those who use the maternity services, student midwives and maternity support workers will be considered.
The conference will be of interest to leaders who wish to understand how they should develop their skills to meet new demands and to commissioners who work with maternity carers to provide a high class service.
Managers and midwives who wish to develop and understand about working in today's climate of change will also benefit from the conference.
Service users will be interested to understand how the maternity service attempts to meet their needs and student midwives and those who are interested in joining the midwifery profession will gain a deeper insight into this career. Maternity support workers may wish to develop their perspective of the maternity services, while educationalists and researchers may wish to consider current trends in maternity care.
The morning theme is Developing Services in 2010; the afternoon theme is Facilitating Change.
The cost to attend the conference is £15 for students, £40 for non-students.

Shakespeare states in the opening 12 lines of this play that it is an explosive swash-buckling romance with a thrilling storyline and a tragic ending. What he doesn't say is how funny it's going to be! Two powerful Verona families, the Montagues and the
Capulets, are at war with one another - but when Montague's son falls in love with Capulet's daughter at a party, a chain-reaction of events is set in motion which has a devastating conclusion.
Illyria last performed this terrific play 10 years ago; the production was Critic's Choice in Edinburgh, attracted 5-star reviews in Canada and received a nomination for Best of Fringe in Vancouver. This year's production promises to mine the humour so often overlooked, and to dazzle you with swordplay.

Achieving positive mental health is the goal that all mental health practitioners seek to achieve for their clients and their carers. Empowering people to direct their own care is an underpinning principle of mental health practice as is improving the quality and safety within the care partnership. However, practitioners have grappled to keep pace with the change in legislation and guidance from statutory bodies.
The revision of the Mental Health Act, a plethora of guidance and regulation, and an increased public health agenda has added to the speed of change in challenging economic times, and the focus has to remain on service users being at the very centre of care decision making. Whilst providing benefits for both users and professionals alike, these issues can nevertheless be challenging and at times perplexing for all concerned. Such things as the development of new and amended roles through job redesign have been an important way of increasing flexibility in service provision and broadening the roles of mental health staff.
The present economic climate has meant improving the efficiency of service provision and value for money are of prime concern. These and many similar issues will be addressed at the conference both in the keynote presentations, concurrent sessions and poster presentations.
Edge Hill University celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2010 and stands for academic and professional excellence. It is a welcoming and diverse community, accessible to everyone, providing exceptional support for students in high-quality learning environments.
