Film Studies

In today’s rapidly changing employment market, it pays to be flexible and to have a variety of skills at your disposal. Our Film Studies programmes help you acquire the abilities and talents valued by employers through the study of film.

There is a range of benefits to studying film as an undergraduate. You will develop your intellectual capacities, your skills in observation, analysis, verbal and written communication, the composition of arguments, and in project management and critical thinking.

In addition, if you are interested in pursuing a career in the field of film and/or television, the foundational knowledge you will acquire will be invaluable to you.

Much that is produced today for both the large and small screens is made with an in-depth understanding of how cinema works, so you can’t afford to be left behind. Whether you aim to become a film director, screenwriter, cinematographer, TV producer or film critic, you will find that our Film Studies combinations will be a tremendously useful start to your journey.

You will be a more perceptive, informed and intelligent filmmaker because you will know what is achievable – and what has already been achieved – with the medium.

Of course, there are no guarantees that anyone will ‘make it’ in the world of film or television. Competition in the industry is fierce, but your potential, and your employability, is greatly enhanced by having a Film Studies degree.

There are many careers open to our graduates. Previous students have moved on to work for the BBC, attend international school films, teach, run small businesses, and study for PhDs. Our Careers Department will be happy to help you through the decisions you make for your future.
