In our department you can study any of the following subjects, either concentrating on one specialism, or in flexible combinations:

  • Chinese Studies: Embrace the challenges of an international world, studying Chinese and English together – the two major global languages of the 21st Century.
  • Creative Writing: Learn and develop your craft as a writer, working with professional poets, novelists, playwrights, screenwriters, and short-story writers. Gain insights into the processes of publishing, broadcasting and performing.
  • English Language: Work with renowned linguistic scholars on a diverse range of language courses including the history of English, forensic linguistics, and language and education.
  • English Literature: Explore the rich diversity of literatures in English, choosing from a wide range of specialist options, covering everything from Gothic novels to lyrical poetry, from travel books to contemporary crime writing.
  • Film Studies: Analyse and interpret a diverse range of films and cinematic styles, with the option to combine this with practical experience in film-making.
  • History: Study the dynamic and fast-changing subject of History, learning to use your research into the past to make sense of the contemporary world.
