| As the Teacher Training
Agency continues its campaign to promote diversity in the profession,
Edge Hill is working hard to encourage people who are currently
under represented to consider teaching as a career option.
Nadeem Baghdadi recently took up a new post in the Faculty of Education
as Ethnic Minority Recruitment Officer. Having recently completed
his own PGCE in Further Education, Nadeem is well qualified to spread
the word amongst minority ethnic communities about the benefits
that the profession can bring.
“My aim is to pass on my own experience of teaching and explain
the rewards and benefits that the profession can bring. The perceived
status of teachers in ethnic communities is quite low and I hope
to change this misconception by telling people about the financial
incentives, as well as the immense sense of job satisfaction that
many teachers experience.”
Edge Hill holds a series of taster courses
for those who are considering taking up teacher training with three
day sessions specifically aimed at minority ethnic communities,
as well as men interested in taking up primary teaching. Nadeem
sees the tasters as an ideal introduction as they include the chance
to spend a day in school observing teachers in practice.
“Good teachers can become role models for young people and
I think it’s really important to make sure that our teachers
are as diverse as the students that we teach.”
