| The
Ormskirk Campus played host to two important visitors to officially
open the latest buildings on the Western Campus. Alan Johnson, Minister
for Higher Education formally opened the £4 million CMIST
building just months before HRH Princess Alexandra unveiled the
new Faculty of Education.
CMIST
“Edge Hill epitomises
everything that the Government is trying to do in widening participation
in higher education and investing in excellent facilities and resources.
You should be a beacon for other universities.”
A fitting tribute from Alan Johnson, Minister for Higher Education
and Lifelong Learning when he formally opened the Centre for Media,
Information Systems and Technology (CMIST) building.
CMIST houses degree programmes in media production, journalism and
computing, providing students and staff with the very latest in
new media technology. It’s one of four new buildings forming
the Western Campus development, where in the last six years construction
programmes have contributed to Edge Hill’s continued investment
in its learning infrastructure.
Mr Johnson expressed his delight in seeing for himself the latest
developments to the Ormskirk Campus, including the emergent Faculty
of Education building, as he took a tour of the campus and met students
and staff. He said that Edge Hill was playing a vital role in widening
participation for the socially excluded, by offering a variety of
excellent courses in a stunning environment.
Chief Executive of Edge Hill, Dr John Cater was pleased to welcome
the Minister: “These are exciting times for Edge Hill as we
continue to expand our learning facilities, resources, portfolio
of courses and support for students to enhance the learning environment.”
Alan Johnson commended Edge Hill’s low student drop out rate
and praised its record of academic achievement and innovation in
e-learning developments.
“I am very impressed by the history of Edge Hill,” he
commented, “and I can see how you’ve built upon that
history. You certainly put the edge into leading edge.”
Faculty
of Education
Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, the Hon Lady Ogilvy, KG,
GCVO, paid her first visit to Edge Hill to open the £9m development,
The Faculty of Education building.
As Chancellor of Lancaster University, Princess Alexandra has presented
degrees and diplomas to Edge Hill students for the last 40 years.
Chief Executive Dr John Cater was especially pleased to welcome
Her Royal Highness, in this her last year, to officially open Edge
Hill’s newest development.
As the largest national provider of Initial Teacher Training for
secondary education and the third largest provider overall, Edge
Hill continues to lead the way in education training.
Dr John Cater: “In the past decade we have invested almost
£60m into our academic infrastructure. The quality of accommodation
in the new Faculty of Education building reflects our fundamental
aim to provide the very best for our trainees, students and teachers.”
The £9m development houses 24 teaching rooms equipped with
the latest technology to support teaching and learning, a lecture
theatre for over 300, office accommodation for over 90 staff and
a restaurant facility with a lakeside view. Cutting edge ICT equipment
and a model school classroom will enhance the experience of trainee
teachers.
