Promising Practices: the Equality Standard in the North-East

The Northumberland Equality Project was born out of the first round of the Comprehensive Performance Assessment. All of the districts and county councils in Northumberland had shown weaknesses on addressing equality and diversity. In fact it was fair to say that the authorities were not dealing with the issues at all. This common failing brought the Councils together to work in partnership to ensure a robust approach to overcoming the weaknesses identified in CPA.

The District Councils of Alnwick, Blyth Valley, Castle Morpeth, Tynedale and Wansbeck came together with Northumberland County came together in partnership to jointly develop and progress their approach to equality and diversity. Achievements and views from a second project that included Darlington Borough Council and North Tyneside Council are also reviewed.
