There are two useful web sites: For vacancies in the Manchester area go to: www.thejobsmine.co.uk/ and for the Liverpool area: www.jobs-merseyside.co.uk/. Another useful website is: www.jobsite.co.uk. This site advertises a variety of jobs including graduate level. As a member of AGCAS (Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) the Careers Centre operates in accordance with the AGCAS Best Practice in Graduate Recruitment (doc) guidelines.
Graduate Prospects is the main national graduate website for careers, working in partnership with university careers services. You may find the Jobs & Work section particularly useful if you are looking for graduate management training opportunities. You can search for vacancies, find graduate employers, explore job sectors & how to get into them.
Particularly useful is Explore types of jobs - where there are over a thousand occupations on the website with related links to vacancy websites for that specific career.
At the beginning of each academic year, the Careers Centre will also receive hard copies of the Prospects Directory containing graduate vacancies from the major graduate recruiters nationally. These can be picked up from the Careers Centre with an information leaflet on how to use these directories most effectively for your job search.
The Careers Centre receives a range of graduate vacancy publications during the year with job hunting tips and vacancy information in – such as Real World, Target, Graduate Careers North West and Doctor Job etc – which you can pick up from the Careers Centre.
There is also a list of the key regional and national graduate recruitment websites in our download zone
Recruitment Fairs, Agencies, Newspapers etc
Recruitment fairs are held throughout the year at universities across the country. Details of these national events, including virtual careers fairs, can be found on the Prospects website.
At Edge Hill we hold three major faculty careers fairs each year:
The Teaching fair is in the autumn
Arts & Sciences is in the spring
Health is in the summer
Check the Latest News section of the website for details of these nearer the time but also for other university fairs e.g. part time jobs fair, volunteering fair etc.
Also under Latest News you will find information about other regional events held at our neighbouring universities which you can attend e.g. specific events in media & PR, finance, other teaching fairs, and a number of generic graduate recruitment fairs in Preston, Liverpool, Manchester etc.
Recruitment Agencies
There has been a large growth in the number of recruitment agencies over the past few years and these agencies can help you find part time, summer and graduate opportunities. Before you use an agency make sure that it complies with the Recruitment & Confederation’s Code of Practice www.rec.uk.com. The site contains a list of all accredited recruitment agencies in the UK. Reputable agencies charge employers, not the candidates, so do not use a service that asks you to pay!
Newspapers & Job Centres
Have their part to play in providing you with job opportunities and most of this can now be accessed on line. Check our list of newspaper advertisement days [PDF] to ensure you know when vacancies for your chosen occupational area are being advertised.
Prospects Graduate is a digital magazine for graduates. Published online every fortnight and packed full of the latest jobs, postgraduate courses, advice and information.
If you have any queries about the above, do contact us at the Careers Centre.
Careers That Are Difficult To Get Into
Many jobs are never advertised and in some career areas it can be hard to find vacancies e.g. media, performing arts, psychology careers etc. However, whatever career you are interested in, the starting point for everyone is to gain some work experience and make some contacts – begin your networking for future jobs!
Some of you may have tried to get work experience in such areas as media but with little success – it is not easy. This is where you have to be creative and persistent if this is what you really want to do.
How have other Edge Hill students gained experience & or jobs that have never been advertised?
A history student wanted to be a sports reporter - in his first year he persistently called at his local radio station asking for work experience – eventually they gave in and let him answer the phone, make tea, tidy up, shadowed reporters, wrote articles for them to assess etc. By third year they were paying him for work, gave him references for first graduate job as a sports researcher for a TV programme, and eventually became Sports editor at a radio station
A media student wanted radio work experience – with her letter asking for work experience she included a radio interview she had made by interviewing staff and students about their thoughts on the Iraq situation. The radio station was delighted with her initiative. They get so many letters for work experience that they ask applicants to complete a task. Fifty per cent of students do not complete the task – separates out those who have the commitment to the work. Our student got the work experience without doing the task because of her initiative.
An English student wanted to work in advertising – the only graduate jobs he saw asked for 2 years experience – how to get in? He looked up advertising agencies in the nearest city and approached them for research interviews for a dissertation he was completing on advertising and would give them a copy of the report in return. Through this he got some work experience. The company was impressed with him and offered him a job that was never advertised, to start after graduation.
If you need some help with this creative approach – come and see us at the Careers Centre. In particular think about getting involved in volunteering as this can be a good way into those most difficult career areas.
