Pedagogy Research Group
Pedagogy research group consist of academics from Computing and IS disciplines evaluating impact of technology on teaching and learning and academics from Business and Management looking at organisational learning, management development and corporate social responsibility. A number of research projects conducted by the group members have been externally funded. Current and future projects include impact of Digital audio feedback, Problem-based learning in second life, Online PBL, students perception of online lectures and Blended Learning.
Pedagogy Research Group Members
Chris Beaumont
Chris Beaumont has led and contributed to numerous externally funded research projects, primarily related to research in the areas of assessment feedback, Problem-based Learning and the application of computing technology. These have included Problem-based learning in Second Life (PREVIEW project); online PBL; modelling assessment feedback processes and approaches to scaffolding the development of self-regulated learning in first year undergraduates.
Chris is currently researching the construction and use of pedagogical agents employing Artificial Intelligence to provide guidance to students in order to promote self-regulated learning.
Shirley Hunter-Barnett
Shirley Hunter-Barnett's research interest is in Technology Enhanced and blended Learning. Shirley is a SOLSTIC fellow and her current project is exploring what impact audio feedback has on widening participation students' learner experiences and if it is a method of feedback that can be used to help students feel less isolated, whilst on an online course.
In addition to this project Shirley is working with a fellow colleague evaluating the use of audio as a feedback tool and whether it is used because it is easily available or for reasons of pedagogy.
Her past projects include the potential to use digitally recorded comments as a form of feedback, with a focus on student and tutor responsiveness.
Sue Murrin-Bailey
Sue Murrin-Bailey’s research interest is in Technology Enhanced and blended Learning. Sue is a Senior SOLSTICE Fellow for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Her most recent project has explored what impact audio feedback and feed forward has as a formative and summative assessment tool, additionally to understand its effectiveness as a teaching support through audio commentary used as part of the learner experience. On-going research will evaluate use of audio to support both tutors and students with dyslexia.
The culmination of the recent research with a fellow colleague evaluating the use of audio has resulted in two Conference presentations and a peer reviewed paper.
