Committed to the Community

Edge Hill University has an emerging national reputation as a dynamic and responsive higher education institution offering a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, professional development and research opportunities to UK and international students.

However, here are a few lesser known facts about the University’s impact at local level:

  • The third largest employer in West Lancashire of around 4,000 staff;
  • According to the latest staff survey results, 88% rated the University as a “good” or “excellent” employer;
  • Ranked 20th in the Sunday Times 75 Best Public Sector Companies to Work For league table;
  • Has contributed up to £800m to the local economy over the last five years;
  • Over £130m has been invested into the physical environment over the last decade;
  • Staff and student spending and direct expenditure with suppliers in 2007 accounted for a £86.2m contribution to the local economy.

Furthermore, the University is a leading centre for sport, arts and culture in the region, providing a valuable resource, not just for staff and students, but also for our local communities.

Edge Hill Sport

Edge Hill Sport (formally Sporting Edge) is a major focus for community activity, with more than 160,000 visits from local people and groups every year.

Since being awarded the nationally recognised Inclusive Fitness Initiative Mark in 2008, Sporting Edge has seen usage by people with a disability rise from 1% to 10%.

*Rose Theatre

The Rose Theatre, hosting its professional programme of events along with its Short Cuts cinema, is a big part of the cultural life of the region. Around 12,000 people participated in community workshops and performing arts activities this year and more than 14,000 enjoyed one of the venue’s performances.

As well as hosting weekend dance, drama and music workshops for young people, the Rose is also used by local amateur dramatics groups for rehearsals and performances.

A series of free public lectures and topical events are also held on campus – and open to all – throughout the year.
